In most cases (especially industrial and household fixed installations): AC is used.
Reason:
The power grid provides AC (single-phase 220V/230V or three-phase 380V/400V, etc.), which is the most convenient, economical and efficient to use directly.
The AC induction motor has a simple structure, is durable, has low maintenance costs and high reliability, and is very suitable for driving pump loads.
In industrial environments, high-power centrifugal pumps almost all use three-phase AC asynchronous motors.
In a few cases (portable, specific applications, solar drive): DC may be used.
Reason:
It needs to be powered by batteries (such as vehicle-mounted water pumps, emergency water pumps, portable equipment).
Very precise speed control is required (some DC motors have better speed control performance).
Directly powered by solar photovoltaic panels (solar water pumps).
Miniaturized or specially designed equipment.
The centrifugal pump itself does not consume electricity, it is a mechanical component. The type of electricity used is determined by the motor that drives the centrifugal pump. In fixed installations, connected to the power grid (factories, buildings, domestic water supply, etc.), centrifugal pumps are almost always driven by AC motors, so they use AC power.
In mobile devices, battery power, solar applications, or specific situations where DC speed regulation is required, centrifugal pumps may be driven by DC motors, so they use DC power.
